Although I know that I have fathoms yet to learn regarding Christian womanhood, I have discovered that the answers to what is my proper role as a Christian woman are to be found in the Word of Almighty God.

In saying this, I don't mean to suggest that no book by any other religious author has value.  However, when a compiler is not fully yielded to God, the end product typically is twisted and damaging in some fashion, elements of which we may or we may not fully discern.  Thus, when we are seeking doctrinal (rather than merely technical) understanding, it is generally wise to avoid sources from authors who are of religions which do not adhere to the law of God (Matthew 7:21-23).  The very fact that you and I and others have perceived any "need" to glean doctrinal understanding from those who are spiritually dead, is of itself, a tragic commentary on the current disrepair of God's Church.  Yet despite that disrepair within the Church, we need to keep foremost in our minds that to touch death cannot and will not cleanse us; God reminds us that it works the other way around:

"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Ask now the priests for a ruling:  'If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?'" And the priests answered and said, "No."  Then Haggai said, "If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these, will the latter become unclean?" And the priests answered and said, "It will become unclean."  Then Haggai answered and said, "'So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,' declares the LORD, 'and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.  (Haggai 2:11-14)

With this said, a most exciting and inspirational Scriptural model which I have found for the proper role of a Christian woman is that of the repentant Church Herself - the affianced Bride of Jesus Christ. The properly repentant Church is a Proverbs 31 woman par excellence! I entreat you to explore with me Her conduct. (I have capitalized references to Her, because She is the Body of Jesus Christ.)

First, She recognizes, deplores, abhors and laments any evil which surrounds Her. Not only does She understand that women are not exempt from this role, but She also understands that Her spiritual survival is dependent upon Her willingness to carry out this distressing duty:

And the LORD said to him, "Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst." But to the others He said in my hearing, "Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity, and do not spare. "Utterly slay old men, young men, maidens, little children, and women, but do not touch any man on whom is the mark; and you shall start from My sanctuary." So they started with the elders who were before the temple.  (Ezekiel 9:4-6)

Why is this duty so important for Her?  It is because it is impossible for Her to properly either love or obey Her Betrothed unless She is actively discerning who He is, and what is of Him, what is from Him, what is part of Him, and what is not.  As a natural outgrowth of Her affection for Her Betrothed, She agonizes at the rebellion of those who resist His loving rule.

Moreover, She tenderly and actively reaches out to the weak and to the afflicted. At the same time, She is diligent to keep Herself chaste and distant from all the sinfulness of the world:

This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (James 1:27)

Distinct modesty characterizes Her.  She is in no way drab; yet She takes great care to ensure that She does not present Herself to the world with the adornments of physical finery, nor in any fashion which could be taken to suggest that She might welcome its friendship.

Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments; but rather by means of good works, as befits women making a claim to godliness.  (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?   (James 4:4)

Her hair is decidedly long. None who gaze on Her glory would think to suggest otherwise. Inconvenience and divergence from fashion are of little concern to Her, when measured against Her opportunity to glorify Her Betrothed. She is pleased to demonstrate Her willing submission to His governance.  She is steadfast in Her refusal to disgrace Him:

But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, disgraces her head; for she is one and the same with her whose head is shaved.  For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.  For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.  For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake.  Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. (1 Corinthians 11:5-10, 14-15)

No matter how many years She has been acquainted with Her Betrothed, She continues to dwell night and day upon His attributes and upon the marvelous wisdom of His ways. Her critics would say that She is obsessed with Him:

My soul is crushed with longing After Thine ordinances at all times.  Thou dost rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, Who wander from Thy commandments.  Take away reproach and contempt from me, For I observe Thy testimonies.  Even though princes sit and talk against me, Thy servant meditates on Thy statutes. Thy testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors. My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Thy word.  I have told of my ways, and Thou hast answered me; Teach me Thy statutes.  Make me understand the way of Thy precepts, So I will meditate on Thy wonders.  My soul weeps because of grief; Strengthen me according to Thy word.  Remove the false way from me, And graciously grant me Thy law.  I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Thine ordinances before me.  I cleave to Thy testimonies; O LORD, do not put me to shame!  I shall run the way of Thy commandments, For Thou wilt enlarge my heart.  Teach me, O LORD, the way of Thy statutes, And I shall observe it to the end.  Give me understanding, that I may observe Thy law, And keep it with all my heart.  Make me walk in the path of Thy commandments, For I delight in it.
(Psalm 119:20-35)

She is a loving and nurturing mother.  Not only is She "obsessed" with the attributes of Her Betrothed, but She seeks to teach and to impart that same understanding, fear, reverence, and adoration within all who Her Betrothed has given into Her care.  Each one of these is like a priceless treasure to Her, and She will not give up on any of them:

"Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

"And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!'  (Luke 15:8-9)

She is certainly a keeper at home, providing abundantly for the needs of Her household and tenderly rearing all who are placed in Her care.  Yet this Woman has a mouth. Silent outside of Her home, She definitely is not.  In Her mouth is the law of kindness.  Her words are governed by Her genuine loving concern for others. But is kindness as defined by man the same as what is kindness in the eyes of God?  (Compare 1 John 5:2)  Is She, in this task, always tactful by human standards?  God commands Her to use Her mouth to assertively exhort, not only other females (human females, and the churches of this world), but also males (human males, and human governments, which are considered male in Scripture).  She is, as was Sarah whom She emulates, bluntly assertive when the occasion demands.  She accepts that She is required to exhort even those males (governments) who are humanly in authority over Her.

In one sense, this Woman is like Anna the prophetess, proclaiming the advent of the Messiah:

And at that very moment she [Anna] came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.  (Luke 2:38)

She is like Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary, "mere women" who Christ chose to use as the first witnesses of His resurrection:

And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.  Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.  And these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.  (Luke 24:8-11)

Yet this Woman is also like Deborah – a soldier of Jesus Christ – and like Huldah and Hannah who uttered strong words of warning.  At times, She enjoys the luxury of being an Abigail, imploring with pleas and gifts an authority figure who will actually heed Her entreaties.

She is like Miriam, so brave, stalwart and daring – a woman to whom and through whom the Almighty God spoke.  Yet at times, She, like Miriam, is leprous with the insistence of independence from the will of Her Betrothed. Then She is disciplined by Her Loving Father.

It is amazing really.  Neither Her Betrothed nor the Father have remained on the earth to warn or admonish the men (human males, and human governments).  This task of proclaiming the message from Her Betrothed and from the Father is delegated significantly to Her – the Bride!  To Her, this duty to speak is both delegated and commanded.

Yet over and over again, She is solemnly charged to not deviate even in the least from the words which Her Betrothed has given Her to speak.  The choice of what to speak is not delegated to Her, nor can She shirk from Her commanded duty to be bold in speaking HIS Words.

Further, She does not seek to take control of the human authorities which are over Her. In fact, She assiduously avoids such roles, except as God specifically orchestrates (as in the individual cases of Joseph and Daniel).

She – the repentant Church – is a servant, and a great and primary part of that service is to warn the world, both the righteous and the wicked (the Church and the rest of the world). Although She doesn't seek to govern or to rule this world, She must bravely warn – telling it where and how it is disobedient to Her Betrothed – and She willingly bears the pain and the suffering of following through with Her duty to so warn and to so teach.

Certainly there is more to be explored in regard to this topic.  I know that I personally have much more to learn and to practice as a Christian woman, but perhaps these tidbits will be a contribution to your ongoing study.
